Capital High School’s HOSA – Future Health Professionals chapter celebrated a series of achievements at the State Leadership Conference, according to an April 17 announcement. The team earned several medals and finalist placements, with three seniors taking first place in their events. In addition, the chapter received the state Spirit Stick for their enthusiasm and presence.
The results are significant for both students and the school community, as they reflect ongoing efforts to provide meaningful opportunities in healthcare education. HOSA is a national student-led organization that allows participants to explore careers in healthcare beyond standard coursework.
Fernanda Ruiz, Vice President of CHS HOSA, was elected New Mexico HOSA State Executive President for the 2026–2027 school year by delegates from across New Mexico. Reid Burgess, CHS Medical Pathway Lead Teacher and HOSA Advisor, said: “This is an amazing honor and a very big deal. Fernanda is such an authentic and charismatic young woman. We are delighted that voting delegates from chapters across New Mexico recognized this and chose her to lead our state.” Burgess added: “We are so proud of these students for working so hard. Truly, I believe the future of healthcare is in great hands.”
Burgess also said that Ruiz received special recognition from Howie Morales, New Mexico Lieutenant Governor.
With these accomplishments at the state level, CHS HOSA members will move on to compete internationally.
