Santa Fe County Fire Department’s (SFCFD) very own Fire Inspector Renee Nix was recently featured in the March/April 2022 issue of “Sprinkler Age” magazine. Though not a magazine you might find adorning most coffee tables, Sprinkler Age is the official publication of the American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA). Renee has been an active member of AFSA for over 12 years and serves on the board for the New Mexico Chapter.
The article, “Celebrating Women in Construction” was in honor of Women in Construction (WIC) Week, which was celebrated the week of March 6th. WIC Week helps to shine a light on the important contributions of women in the male-dominated construction industry.
Renee has been in the fire service for 32 years, serving 22 of those years in the SFCFD Fire Marshal’s Office where her job duties include fire plans review, field inspections, and keeping the filming industry fire safe in Santa Fe County. Inspector Nix is a person who has built a solid reputation in the fire and life safety arena throughout New Mexico and beyond. She started out her fire service career as a volunteer firefighter with SFCFD in 1990 when the Department was entirely made up of volunteers.
She was recently elected president of the Northern New Mexico Association of Public Safety Officials which is a part of the International Code Council (ICC). She also serves as a New Mexico director and secretary for the ICC Region XI group.
When asked for her advice for other women entering the field, Renee stated in the article “Staying professional is the key. As time goes by, these companies will respect you and rely on you. Remember The Golden Rule—treat others the way you would like to be treated.”.
