The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department announced that state and federal income tax returns are due on April 15.
Residents who do not owe taxes are still encouraged to file returns in order to claim refundable tax credits. The department said that New Mexico offers several tax credits, including those for parents, working families, and low-income taxpayers.
Most taxpayers can securely file their state returns for free using the online Taxpayer Access Point (TAP), which is accessible at https://tap.state.nm.us/. The department’s YouTube page provides step-by-step tutorials on how to use the online portal. Taxpayers can also check the status of their refund through TAP at any time. Electronic filings generally result in faster refunds compared to paper filings.
Filing early is recommended as it reduces the chance of being affected by a fraudulent return filed in a taxpayer’s name. The department advises taxpayers to be cautious about tax scams, noting that it will never contact taxpayers by phone unsolicited. However, the department may contact individuals by mail to verify personal income tax returns as part of efforts to combat identity theft.
Suspicious communications can be reported to the department’s Tax Fraud Investigations Division by emailing Tax.Fraud@tax.nm.gov or calling the tax fraud hotline at 1-866-457-6789. Personal income tax forms and instructions are available at https://tax.newmexico.gov. For filing assistance, resources are listed on the Personal Income Tax Filing Assistance Information page, and a list of approved software vendors is published at https://www.tax.newmexico.gov/tax-professionals/e-filing-mandatesoverview/software-developers/, according to the official roster page.
