The Public Education Commission consists of ten elected Commissioners to serve for staggered terms of four years with no term limits as provided by law. Commission members are residents of the Public Education Commission district from which they are elected. The Commission is the authorizer for all state chartered charter schools in New Mexico.
Charter schools in New Mexico may be authorized through the school district in which they are located by the Public Education Commission. In the 2022-23 school year there 57 charter schools authorized by the Commission and 43 charter schools authorized by districts.
