Santa Fe County Commissioner Camilla Bustamante, representing District 3, and the Santa Fe County Public Works Department have announced a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the expansion of the Madrid Volunteer Fire Station. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at 10:30 a.m., at 5 Firehouse Ln, Madrid, NM.
The fire station, originally built in 1989, has been remodeled to improve functionality and safety amid increasing wildfire risks. Updates include a new training room with a kitchen, an HVAC system, and ADA-compliant restrooms and showers. Additional improvements are ADA parking and accessible pathways.
To meet operational demands, the fire bay was expanded for more equipment storage. A concrete pad was added along with a vehicle exhaust extraction system for safety. The building’s exterior received new stucco and a liquid waste system to meet environmental standards.
Commissioner Bustamante emphasized the project’s significance: “Public safety is one of the most important roles in service to our communities. The upgrades to the Madrid Fire Station are prime to improve the quality of the work and lives for those who volunteer to protect and serve the community.”
The project cost $1,297,518.55 and was funded through General Obligation Bonds, Capital Outlay GRT, Fire Operation Funds, Fire Impact Funds, and Fire Protection Funds. Construction began on May 22, 2024, with substantial completion by April 2, 2025.
