On June 10, 2025, the Santa Fe County Board of County Commissioners passed Resolution 2025-65, which declares extreme or severe drought conditions and prohibits the sale and use of certain fireworks in unincorporated and wildland areas of Santa Fe County.

The decision follows ongoing drought conditions and the immediate threat posed by range, brush, grass, and forest fires. The Santa Fe County Fire Marshal recommended banning specific fireworks such as missile-type rockets, helicopters, aerial spinners, stick-type rockets, and ground audible devices. This resolution is effective from June 10 to July 10, 2025, with a possibility of extension if dry conditions continue.

“This fireworks ban is a preventive measure to protect lives, property, and the environment,” stated Fire Marshal Jaome Blay. “We urge all residents to avoid personal use of fireworks and instead attend professionally produced public displays.”

While high-risk fireworks are restricted under this resolution, some low-impact fireworks remain permissible under strict safety guidelines. These include ground and hand-held sparkling devices like cone fountains, crackling devices, cylindrical fountains, flitter sparklers, ground spinners, illuminating torches, and wheels. These permissible fireworks must be used only on paved or barren surfaces with an accessible water source nearby. The public is advised to exercise caution and adhere to all safety recommendations when using these devices.

The Santa Fe County Fire Department underscores the seriousness of wildland fire risks and emphasizes that wildfire prevention is a shared responsibility.
