The Santa Fe County Housing Authority (SFCHA) will close its Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Section 8 waitlist to new applicants starting Friday, September 26, 2025, at 5:00 PM MDT. The decision is a result of a funding shortfall that affects the program’s ability to issue new vouchers.

According to the SFCHA, this action aims to make sure limited resources are directed toward those already on the waiting list and current participants. “This measure is necessary to ensure the SFCHA can continue to serve those already on the waiting list with the limited funds available. All available resources must be prioritized for existing program participants and those already on the waitlist for the foreseeable future. We remain committed to serving our community and will continue to monitor funding availability. Updates will be provided as circumstances evolve,” according to an official statement from SFCHA.

For new applicants, after the deadline no further applications will be accepted by mail or in person. Those currently on the waitlist will not see any change in their status but are reminded they must report any changes in address, household composition, or income in writing or risk removal from the waitlist.

The SFCHA said that announcements about reopening the waitlist will be made through local media outlets and its official website when additional funding becomes available.
