Santa Fe County has opened applications for its 2025 Backyard Composting Program, which provides free composting systems and training to residents in unincorporated areas. The program aims to help households reduce waste sent to landfills by turning organic materials such as yard trimmings and food scraps into compost.

According to the county, about one-third of household waste consists of compostable organic matter. By diverting this material from landfills, the program seeks to lower greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable practices at home.

“Our backyard composting program empowers residents to take action in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from home,” said Santa Fe County Sustainability Manager Jacqueline Beam. “Composting is an easy practice that reduces air pollution, provides vital soil enrichment, conserves water, and supports food security. It’s a winning solution for your garden and our planet.”

The county has worked with Reunity Resources since 2018 to administer the program. Participants receive guidance and technical support from the organization. “We love working with Santa Fe County to help make composting accessible to our community,” said Reunity Resources Program Director Juliana Ciano. “Composting is a tangible, daily act of hope and positive transformation, and this program can help you do it right in your backyard!”

The initiative primarily targets residents who are not currently composting but may also be available for those already participating if a new system would allow them to divert more organic waste.

Applications will be accepted until August 27, 2025, on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents can apply online or pick up paper applications at several county locations including the County Administrative Building, County Public Works Complex, Edgewood Senior Center, and Pojoaque Satellite Office. Applications are also available for download on the county website through the Sustainability Division’s page.

For questions or assistance with applications, residents can contact Elizabeth Houghton at 505-986-6392 or ehoughton@santafecountynm.gov.
