Santa Fe, NM – In response to heightened wildfire risks in Southern New Mexico, the Santa Fe County Fire Marshal has issued an order effective June 27, 2025, suspending all current and new open burning permits in unincorporated areas of Santa Fe County. This measure aims to protect residents’ lives and property as the region faces hot, dry conditions that elevate fire hazards.

Open burning is defined as the combustion of materials where emissions are released directly into the air without passing through a chimney or stack. The ban does not apply to road flares, smudge pots, BBQ grills, or portable outdoor fireplaces with proper spark arresters.

The order includes several key provisions: all current burn permits are suspended; no new permits will be issued; and open burning is prohibited until further notice. Violations may result in enforcement under the County Fire Code.

This action aligns with the U.S. Forest Service’s Stage 1 Fire Restrictions for the Santa Fe National Forest and addresses rapidly worsening wildfire conditions.

Residents are advised to avoid activities that could ignite dry grass or structures and exercise caution with outdoor flames. Any signs of smoke or fire should be reported immediately by calling 911.

The suspension will remain until improved weather conditions allow for its rescission by the Fire Marshal.
