Santa Fe Public Schools recognized two students, Santiago and Jostin, for their determination, leadership, and academic growth in a spotlight released on April 24.

The recognition of these students underscores the district’s focus on supporting academic achievement and personal development. Both Santiago and Jostin have demonstrated resilience and leadership within their school communities.

Santiago has shown significant progress since joining his school. He faced initial challenges adapting to a new environment but overcame them through perseverance. His commitment was especially evident in the Spanish Spelling Bee; after advancing to the district competition last year without placing, he returned this year with renewed determination and earned third place at the district level. Beyond academics, Santiago participates in soccer and guitar club, building confidence through extracurricular activities. The release notes that “Santiago also demonstrates a strong sense of integrity and personal responsibility. He is willing to speak up when he sees injustice and holds both himself and others accountable.” It adds that his “perseverance, leadership, and character make him a valued member of his school community.”

Jostin is a fifth grader at Nava Elementary who exemplifies leadership, resilience, and curiosity in learning. Known for his positive attitude among peers, Jostin sets an example by staying focused on classwork while encouraging others to do the same. His strengths are particularly notable in math and technology; he often assists classmates with digital tools as well as problem-solving tasks requiring creativity. According to the statement: “Above all, Jostin’s resilience sets him apart. He approaches challenges with perseverance and a growth mindset…His positive outlook…makes him an outstanding role model within the Nava Elementary community.”
