City of Santa Fe issued the following announcement on Aug. 29.

The City of Santa Fe and the Santa Fe Police Department are partnering with New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence for the 2020 Gun Buyback Event.  The Buyback Event will be on Saturday September 12, 2020, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm at Santa Fe Police Headquarters, located at 2515 Camino Entrada.  NMPGV is a 501(c)3 non-partisan organization whose mission is to reduce firearm injury and death through public health, education, advocacy, and public awareness, in order to protect the safety of our families and communities. This is the third event SFPD and NMPGV has held this event to support responsible gun ownership and keep unwanted firearms out of the wrong hands.

Chief Andrew Padilla said, "This a great opportunity to turn in a gun that you haven’t used in years or one you have no need for anymore."

The event is a safe surrender event facilitated by NMPGV and no information is retained on the participant turning in the firearms.  Participants can turn in as many firearms as they like, but they must be unloaded, but in working condition.  NMPGV will provide participants a gift card for food, gas, or Amazon in exchange for each firearm turned in.  The gift cards are purchased by NMPGV and is not an expense to the City of Santa Fe.   The value of the gift card is dependent on the firearm turned in:

  • $250.00 for a semi-automatic rifle
  • $200.00 for a semi-automatic handgun
  • $100.00 for a long guns and pistols
NMPGV will also be providing gunlocks to gun owners free of charge.

Once the surrender is completed and gift card issued, SFPD personnel will assist with conducting a National Crime Information Center (NCIC) inquiry on the surrendered firearms to ensure they are not stolen.  If a firearm is determined to be stolen, the firearm will be entered into evidence and the rightful owner contacted to retrieve their property.

Participants will be required to be in compliance with the standing Health Order and City Ordinance concerning COVID-19 safe practices and the wearing of a face covering.
