The flu season for 2024-2025 has commenced in New Mexico, with the New Mexico Department of Health (NMHealth) confirming initial cases. The Scientific Laboratory Division has identified the first patients testing positive for seasonal flu, noting an increase in cases particularly in the Northwest region of the state.
"Now is a good time to get your flu vaccination before we start to see flu activity statewide," stated NMHealth Secretary Patrick Allen. He emphasized that annual vaccinations reduce the likelihood of illness, absenteeism from work or school, and serious health complications.
Flu vaccines are updated yearly to provide optimal protection against the virus. NMHealth advises that everyone aged six months and older receive their flu vaccine each year, with availability extending through May. This aligns with NMHealth's objective to become the healthiest state by 2040.
It is noted that COVID-19 vaccines are also updated annually and can be administered simultaneously with flu vaccines. Routine vaccinations play a crucial role in maintaining public health.
For further information on vaccination locations across New Mexico, residents can contact the NMHealth Helpline at 1-833-SWNURSE (1-833-796-8773). The helpline operates Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., including holidays. It is staffed by nurses ready to address health inquiries and connect individuals with healthcare services.
Additionally, NMHealth provides a weekly updated viral respiratory infection dashboard to inform medical providers and residents about respiratory virus trends throughout New Mexico.
