This month, the administrative staff and leadership of Santa Fe Public Schools (SFPS) took a hands-on approach to community building by volunteering alongside school nutrition workers to serve Thanksgiving lunch. Administrators across the district left their offices to assist in school cafeterias, helping distribute meals to students and families. This initiative was a gesture of appreciation for the essential work done by nutrition staff who provide nutritious meals daily.
Maria Burgos, a substitute nutrition worker, and Lucy Stanus, SFPS Director of Sustainability, were among those serving Thanksgiving lunch at Santa Fe High School. Superintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez participated in the event at Ramirez Thomas Elementary, where he served pumpkin pie to parents. Deputy Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Vanessa Romero also contributed her efforts at the same location.
Public Information Officer Tara Melton joined in by serving Thanksgiving lunch to students at Santa Fe High School. Superintendent Chavez reflected on the significance of this volunteer effort: “Our school nutrition workers do an incredible job every day to provide healthy meals for our students, and this is a small way we can show our gratitude,” he said. “It’s also a wonderful opportunity for us as leaders to connect directly with our students and families, sharing in the joy and tradition of Thanksgiving.”
The presence of familiar faces from the district office was appreciated by both students and parents. This act of service honored the contributions of nutrition staff while strengthening community bonds within schools.
At Salazar Elementary, an extra-special surprise awaited students as volunteers from the Santa Fe community and Capital High School joined the festivities, ensuring no child ate alone. Principal Alyssa Maestas commented on the impact: “Moments like these remind us how powerful it is to come together as a community,” she said. “Seeing our students smiling and connecting with volunteers and older peers shows the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and care in our schools.”
