On Apr 17, 2024, the New Mexico Department of Health (NMHealth) is urging residents to observe Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Awareness Week and consistently practice safe sex. The initiative, which takes place in the second full week of April (14-20), seeks to increase awareness and diminish the stigma surrounding STI prevention, testing, and treatment.

According to Janine Waters, the STD Program Manager, "STIs are very common. There are millions of infections each year in the United States." Waters emphasizes the importance of knowing one's STI status as a vital step in halting the transmission of STIs, especially since many infections can be asymptomatic.

STIs, which encompass viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites transmitted through sexual contact and bodily fluids exchange, can often be symptomless or present mild symptoms, underscoring the significance of STI testing, which is crucial for individuals engaging in sexual activity.

NMHealth advises all New Mexico residents to engage in open dialogue with healthcare providers, inquire about STI transmission, and discuss testing statuses with future sexual partners. By taking proactive measures, individuals can reduce the risk of infection and dispel the fear and shame associated with sexual health discussions, ultimately fostering a culture of prevention and treatment.

The department also highlights the availability of resources for those seeking to prevent or treat STIs, noting that while most STIs are easily treatable and some are curable, they can lead to adverse health outcomes if left untreated.

To further promote sexual health and well-being, NMHealth encourages individuals to prioritize conversations about STIs and STDs, seek information on preventive measures such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PREP) or post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for HIV prevention, and access additional information from reputable sources like the CDC and nmhealth.org.

For further inquiries related to this press release, individuals are encouraged to contact David Barre at (505) 699-9237 (Office).

In conclusion, NMHealth's recognition of STI Awareness Week serves as a reminder for individuals to prioritize safe sex practices, engage in open communication about sexual health, and take proactive steps to protect themselves and their partners.
