The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) will join communities nationwide in observing National Rural Health Day on November 21. This annual event, initiated by the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH) in 2011, takes place every third Thursday of November. It aims to highlight the "Power of Rural" and recognize those who work to meet the healthcare needs of nearly 61 million rural Americans.
Susan Garcia, Director of Health Equity for NMDOH, emphasized the importance of equitable healthcare access: "It is of vital importance that we ensure all New Mexicans have the opportunity to be healthy and have access to affordable, quality health care regardless of where they call home." She also noted NMDOH's commitment to acknowledging the efforts of health professionals and volunteers both on National Rural Health Day and throughout the year.
Rural communities face unique healthcare challenges such as accessibility issues, a shortage of healthcare providers, and higher numbers of uninsured or under-insured residents. Approximately one in five Americans live in these areas.
