It is the season to consider getting a flu vaccination, as December 2-6 marks National Influenza Vaccination Week. Residents of New Mexico are encouraged to receive their flu shots ahead of the holiday gatherings during Christmas and New Year’s.
Miranda Durham, Chief Medical Officer at the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH), emphasized the importance of timely vaccination: “Early December is a great time to get it if you haven’t already because it takes up to two weeks to build up the maximum protection the flu vaccine provides. That’s plenty of time before traveling and spending extended time with our loved ones.”
The vaccine is available for everyone six months and older, particularly those at high risk for severe flu complications. Insured adults can schedule vaccinations through local pharmacies or primary care providers, using an online provider locator map or by calling 1-833-SWNURSE.
For children aged 18 and under, vaccines are accessible regardless of insurance status, covered by the Vaccines for Children program. Appointments for children and uninsured or underinsured adults can be made at nearby public health offices.
Currently, about 20% of eligible New Mexicans have received their flu shot for the 2024-2025 season. The flu season extends from October to May, typically peaking in February.
Additional information regarding vaccination rates can be found on the NMDOH Viral Respiratory Dashboard. For further inquiries about this press release, David Morgan is available at 575-528-5197 (Office) or 575-649-0754 (Mobile).
