The state of New Mexico has launched ePrevention, an online tool designed to address alcohol misuse. This initiative uses E-SBIRT (Electronic Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment), a public health approach aimed at empowering individuals to evaluate their alcohol consumption, receive personalized feedback, and access necessary support services.
"Alcohol misuse is a major contributor to injuries and deaths in New Mexico," said Rebecca Neudecker, Section Manager for the Office of Alcohol Misuse Prevention at the New Mexico Department of Health. She expressed hope that ePrevention will help connect with more individuals seeking assistance in reducing their alcohol use or dependence.
The tool includes a survey to help users identify their current risk level regarding alcohol misuse. It then provides interventions such as recommended resources, education, and referrals to specialized providers if needed. For healthcare providers, ePrevention serves as an additional resource for identifying at-risk individuals and connecting them with suitable treatment options.
"Improving access to online screening and intervention for alcohol misuse is a much-needed step forward,” stated Tami Spellbring, Deputy Director for Clinical and Prevention Services at the New Mexico Health Care Authority. She highlighted that this tool will aid medical providers, social workers, and mental health professionals in supporting New Mexicans who need help.
Individuals can assess their risk using links provided for English Assessment or Evaluación en Español. The launch of ePrevention is supported by a comprehensive marketing campaign involving email, social media, and digital engagements aimed at encouraging widespread adoption of the tool among various stakeholders.
ePrevention is a collaborative effort between the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH), the New Mexico Health Care Authority (HCA), and CHESS Health.
