Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for men, women, and most racial and ethnic groups in the United States. It also holds this grim title in New Mexico as of 2022.

Dr. Miranda Durham, chief medical officer for the New Mexico Department of Health, stated, “This February we are encouraging New Mexicans to take steps to protect their heart health.” She added that on February 7th, residents are invited to wear red to raise awareness about heart disease and support affected women.

High blood pressure is a primary contributor to heart disease. Nearly half of adults in the United States suffer from high blood pressure, with 31.8% of New Mexicans affected in 2021.

The Centers for Disease Control provides more information about heart disease, while Go Red for Women offers details about wear red day.
