Throughout February, the New Mexico Department of Health's Office of Oral Health Program is focusing on raising awareness about the importance of early dental care for children. The initiative aligns with National Children's Dental Health Month.

Leisha D. Ortiz, Interim Director of the NMDOH Office of Oral Health, stated, "Healthy teeth are essential to a child’s overall well-being and success in life." She emphasized that "dental health outcomes are mainly determined by daily habits," adding that regular dental visits and healthy habits from an early age can prevent cavities and establish lifelong oral health.

The NMDOH highlights the role of proper dental care, mindful nutrition choices, and active parental involvement in maintaining children's oral health. Simple daily practices can effectively protect children's smiles.

During February, the Office of Oral Health will collaborate with schools and community groups across New Mexico to offer educational resources, screenings, fluoride varnish applications, and dental sealants.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared February 2025 as "Children’s Dental Health Month" in New Mexico.
