Portions of Bandelier National Monument Will Reopen

Bandelier

Superintendent Patrick Suddath is happy to announce that Bandelier is scheduled to reopen to the public this Friday, May 27. The park has been closed since  April 30, 2022, due to the Cerro Pelado Fire. “As the fire containment continues to increase and fire defense measures are being removed, we can safely welcome back the public” stated Suddath.

Due to the extreme fire danger across the entire region, open areas are limited to:

Pueblo Loop Trail – the main trail behind the park visitor center

Falls Trail to Upper Falls

Frey Trail

Tyuonyi Overlook Trail

Tsankawi Trail

All campgrounds, wilderness and backcountry areas and the Alcove House and Alcove House Trail will remain closed.

Extreme fire danger is expected to persist until Northern New Mexico receives significant moisture and conditions have improved. This is in step with the Stage 3 forest-wide closure for the Santa Fe National Forest. Under Stage 3 fire restrictions, the following are prohibited: All outdoor burning, the use of campfire or charcoal grills (gas grills may be used); all outdoor smoking except for inside vehicles.

Manhattan Project National Historical Park visitor center in Los Alamos is open Fridays through Mondays, 10am-3pm for you to learn about and explore more of the human and natural history of the area. As well, there are museums and a nature center in Los Alamos with more to discover.

Fort Union National Monument, Pecos National Historical Park and Valles Caldera National Preserve remain closed. For additional details or changes in status, please visit each park website.

Bandelier National Monument is open from sunrise to sunset. In Frijoles Canyon, the park visitor center and the park store (operated by Western National Parks Association) is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm and the café, Sirphey at Bandelier, is open from 9am to 4:30pm.
