The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is encouraging a smart, safe, and fun summer through its new ENDWI campaign.

The program was created to help reduce the number of drunk driving-related crashes and fatalities on New Mexico roadways.

This summer's ENDWI campaign will feature pool parties and the reminder to get home safely, according to KRQE. This year's slogan is "Don't crash the party. Designate a driver."

"This summer, we're looking to liven things up, brighten things up … have a different, more positive spin on people making smart choices when they get behind the wheel," Jeff Barela, Director of the Traffic Safety Division at NMDOT, said.

NMDOT's ads will run throughout the summer on television and radio, as well as online and on billboards across New Mexico.

The 100 Days and Nights of Summer campaign began on Monday, KRQE reported. Drivers will see an increase in police checkpoints and patrols throughout the summer and into September.

Statistics showed that 40% of fatal car crashes in New Mexico in 2019 were alcohol-related, according to KRQE. There were 10,376 DWI arrests and 1,466 people were injured in alcohol-involved crashes.

As part of the campaigns, an Uber code is available during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, KRQE reported. Those who participate will get $10 off rides, two rides per person, beginning Friday at noon through 3 a.m. on July 5 when they use the code LIBERTY22. Tips are not included and the promotional code cannot be used for Uber Eats.
