The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) has released the latest school ratings on New Mexico VISTAS, showing significant progress within the Santa Fe Public Schools (SFPS) district. All eight SFPS schools previously identified as needing improvement have now been upgraded to "traditional" status.

This year's ratings are based primarily on test scores but include updated methods. A major change is in how student growth for grades 3rd-8th is calculated, focusing on individual student growth rather than comparing year-over-year proficiency rates across entire schools. Currently, all SFPS schools hold a designation of either "traditional" or "spotlight."

Superintendent Hilario “Larry” Chavez expressed pride in the recognition from the state, stating, "We are extremely proud that the hard work of our educators and students is being recognized by the state." He added that they aim to continue improving student outcomes: "We believe this is only the beginning. Our goal is to build on this momentum and continue improving student outcomes. We won’t rest here."

Deputy Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Vanessa Romero highlighted the progress achieved through various efforts, saying, "We are thrilled with the progress we’re seeing. The combined efforts in implementing Standards-Based Instruction, offering free summer programming, achieving state-leading results in reducing chronic absenteeism, and the dedication of our staff are yielding positive results."

Beata Thorstensen, Chief of Assessment and Accountability, noted NMPED's collaborative approach with school districts: “NMPED has made a concerted effort to partner with school districts to enhance both the methods and accuracy of data in school ratings.”

SFPS extends congratulations to its staff, students, families, and board of education for their dedication to improving outcomes. The commitment remains strong toward making a positive impact.
