The Santa Fe Public Schools (SFPS) Volunteer Program has partnered with the City of Santa Fe’s Office of Economic Development to expand its reach and effectiveness. This collaboration is aimed at enhancing volunteer opportunities and providing meaningful support to students.
With financial backing from the City of Santa Fe, SFPS has hired contracted staff to bolster the program's capacity. The expansion includes free virtual tutoring through the Help U Homework Hotline, improved volunteer support, and a more efficient process for matching and vetting volunteers.
The investment by the city is intended to increase community-wide volunteer participation, focusing on young adults, parents, and retired individuals. The initiative aims to strengthen adult-to-student ratios and align volunteer skills with student needs for effective support.
“Education and economic development go hand in hand—when we invest in our students, we invest in the future of Santa Fe," said Johanna Nelson, Director of the Office of Economic Development. "By expanding volunteer capacity, this collaboration provides students and teachers with essential support while offering meaningful opportunities for community members to give back. We’re excited for this partnership and its potential positive impact on our schools and community.”
Sabra Romero, SFPS Volunteer Coordinator, emphasized the importance of this partnership: “The support from the Office of Economic Development reinforces the importance of our District Volunteer Program. It allows us to engage all generations in creating fulfilling experiences that benefit not only our students but the broader Santa Fe community.”
Superintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez also commented on the significance of this collaboration: “Volunteers play a crucial role in supporting our students and educators. This partnership with the City of Santa Fe strengthens our ability to provide high-quality, personalized support to students while fostering a culture of community engagement. We are grateful for this investment in our schools and our future.”
