Students at Sweeney Elementary took part in a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Week from March 11-14, focusing on activities aimed at promoting mindfulness, self-awareness, and positivity.

"Tessa Lucero, our school counselor brought this idea to me,” said Principal Melissa Kovac. “She prepped the materials and together we turned an idea into a school-wide success. Our goal was to give students practical tools to help them manage their emotions and develop healthy coping strategies. It was wonderful seeing students so engaged in activities encouraging positivity and self-reflection."

The event's highlight was the Self-Care Fair, where students participated in hands-on experiences to support emotional well-being. Activities included creating breathing sticks and folding fidget tools, which encouraged calmness and focus. The breathing sticks helped students manage their emotions by guiding their breathing patterns, while origami provided a soothing creative outlet.

Additionally, students engaged in coloring activities and journaling that promoted self-reflection and positivity. During journaling sessions, they were asked to write down five positive things about themselves to build self-esteem and encourage a growth mindset. This exercise reminded students of their unique values and capabilities.

The SEL Day at Sweeney Elementary offered a valuable opportunity for students to learn essential skills for managing emotions, reducing stress, and fostering a positive self-image—tools beneficial both inside and outside the classroom.
