The New Mexico legislature is considering bills that would regulate e-cigarette and vaping products sold in the state.
The legislation would set requirements for licensing the production, distribution and sale of e-cigarette products in the state. It would also set age restrictions as to who can legally buy e-cigarettes and vaping products. That would mean raising the age from 18 to 21 years old.
However, the varying bills and proposals would have different requirements for the same products. For example, one bill would allow manufacturers to produce flavored liquids. Meanwhile, another bill would prohibit flavorings in e-liquid.
Special interest groups have voiced their disapproval of the proposed bills, but for different reasons. The American Vaping Association has said that certain flavors are popular among those who are trying to quit smoking. Meanwhile, the American Cancer Society said that all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, should be better regulated.
“We want all tobacco-related products to be regulated in the same manner and would like the definitions to be the same instead of separate,” said Marisa Trujillo of the American Cancer Society: Cancer Action Network.
