Announces Next Poet Laureate
and City Historian
The new Poet Laureate and the new City Historian have been named by the City of Santa Fe Arts Commission. Both will serve two-year terms and receive $5,000 annual honoraria from the Arts & Culture Department. These honorary positions are ceremonial and educational, and are unrelated to the CHART process.
Poet Laureate Darryl Lorenzo Wellington: The Poet Laureate program raises awareness of the power of poetry and the spoken word while celebrating the spirit of the people and the unique qualities of our city. Darryl Lorenzo Wellington will make public performances marking important civic occasions and present educational seminars for the public.
In addition to writing award-winning poetry, Mr. Wellington is a playwright, performance artist, essayist, critic, and journalist whose work has appeared in many national publications, including The Nation, The Washington Post, and The Christian Science Monitor. He has lived in Santa Fe for 10 years.
City Historian Valerie Rangel: The City Historian position is given to an individual who has a demonstrated broad knowledge of Santa Fe’s cultural history. As Historian, Valerie Rangel embraces the opportunity to engage in inclusive civic discourse by conducting public research and making public presentations.
An alumna of the University of New Mexico, Ms. Rangel has worked as an archivist for the New Mexico Records Center and Archives and has conducted research, contributed historical essays, and done archival work for the New Mexico Office of the State Historian.
