A significant winter storm is anticipated to affect New Mexico starting Wednesday night, prompting residents to take necessary precautions. The National Weather Service forecasts substantial snowfall, low visibility, strong winds, and freezing temperatures in northern New Mexico and the Rio Grande Valley.
The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) has issued a reminder about measures to prevent cold-related illnesses. "Since Oct 1, there have been 95 cold-related emergency department visits statewide," stated Srikanth Paladugu, NMDOH Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau Chief. "Last winter, the overall total was 918, underscoring the serious health risks associated with extreme winter conditions."
To stay safe during the storm, NMDOH advises monitoring local news and updates from the National Weather Service. Residents can also visit NM-Tracking for information on cold-related illnesses and current data on emergency department visits related to cold weather.
