Nature Photography Day

Photography

Each year, June 15 is designated by the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) to promote the enjoyment of nature photography, and to explain how images are used to advance the cause of conservation and protect plants, wildlife, and landscapes both locally and globally. Visit their website here: https://nanpa.org/events/nature-photography-day/

Bandelier National Monument is an excellent place to immerse yourself in nature. Doing it with a camera or cellphone provides memories that can live long into the future.   And you never know when you might catch that special image that could make a difference.

PHOTOGRAPHY HINTS

-Don't get so close to wildlife that you change the animal's behavior.  This is especially true for baby animals or nesting birds.  It is also dangerous for you if you get too close to some park inhabitants. Not just bears and mountain lions, even mule deer, can pose a danger if you get in their way.  Did you know that more park visitors are hurt by deer than other wild animals every year?  When possible, use a long lens for wildlife.

-Try a different angle for your shot.  Get down close to the ground or try a view from above.  Be creative but also be safe.

-Clouds and varied weather can make for very different photos than a clear sunny day.  Changing seasons also provide varied opportunities.

-Try a panorama.  Most cellphones today have this option and it can make for some very interesting and unique perspectives on an often photographed scene.
