Where there is world-class science, there is a wealth of talent and passion for the arts, recreation, and the environment. Los Alamos is an extraordinary example of this!
The scientists of the Manhattan Project worked long hours to solve the greatest scientific question of their day, and in their free time they built a ski hill, an ice rink, and a golf course, created a theater group and a choral society, and explored the surrounding mountains – to mention a few. Creating a quality of life where their recreational, cultural, and artistic talents could be celebrated was very important to life in the secret city.
Today that legacy lives on through assets and organizations such as the Arts Council, Concert Association, Los Alamos Little Theater, the Choral Society, Symphony Orchestra, Light Opera, Lads of Enchantment, Hill Stompers, Master Gardeners, Pajarito Mountain Ski Area, Southwest Nordic Ski School, the Sportsman Club, Pajarito Environmental Education Center, the Historical Society, and so many more.
