Santa Fe Public Schools (SFPS) has commended parents who have pursued their General Education Diplomas (GEDs) in Spanish this year via the Parent Academy. The program is offered by SFPS’ Equity, Diversity and Engagement Department in collaboration with Santa Fe Community College (SFCC). Among the participants, two parents, Susana Talavera and Beatriz Solis, successfully completed their GEDs in 2024.
These individuals are part of a group of 14 SFPS parents who participated in the fall session and nine who attended the spring session. The classes were held twice a week from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Cesar Chavez Community School. The initiative was funded by a city grant and instruction was provided by an SFCC faculty member.
Superintendent Hilario “Larry” Chavez expressed his excitement over the achievements of these parents. He said, “We are excited to celebrate the accomplishments of our parents who pursued GEDs this year through the Parent Academy. When you help the adults in the family, and open the door to additional earnings, outcomes for students improve. It’s a win-win all the way around.”
