Between May 3rd and 15th, Partners in Education (PiE) recognized six exceptional teachers from Santa Fe Public Schools (SFPS) with the Teachers Who Inspire awards. Each of the awardees received $1,500 in recognition of their commitment to fostering a love for learning and demonstrating exemplary classroom leadership. The selection process was based on recommendations submitted by SFPS teachers and principals.
Among the recipients was Josh Acuna, a fifth-grade teacher at Ramirez Thomas Elementary School. Acuna started his career as an educational assistant in a high-needs special education classroom, which equipped him with invaluable experience in tailoring assignments to meet diverse student needs and maintaining student engagement. Now in his second year of teaching, Acuna is known for his remarkable ability to connect with students and foster a sense of community. He also serves as a state ambassador on the New Mexico Teacher Leader Network.
Patricia "Patty" De Dios, a kindergarten teacher at Acequia Madre Elementary School, was another recipient of the award. Known for her kindness and warmth, De Dios has been instrumental in implementing initiatives focused on student thinking and inspiring a love for learning. She has also worked towards emphasizing student voice and choice through organizing a student council.
Rachel Gersh, who teaches fourth grade bilingual English language arts and science at El Camino Real Academy, was also honored. Gersh has dedicated over 10 years to teaching at the academy after spending six years as an elementary bilingual teacher at Salazar Elementary School. She is known for making learning exciting through various activities that help students grasp the curriculum.
Anna Gibson, an art teacher for grades K-6 at Salazar Elementary School, was recognized for her ability to inspire students by showcasing their potential. Gibson's work includes hosting visiting artists in her classroom and supporting students' connection with the wider community.
Zoe Gierman, a second-grade teacher at Wood Gormley Elementary School, was honored for teaching her students the power of their own voices and backgrounds. Gierman has been instrumental in improving standardized test scores across content areas, particularly for students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
Finally, Chris Mosconi, a second-grade teacher at El Dorado Community School, was recognized for his creativity and infectious joy of learning that inspires students to take the lead in their education.
