The New Mexico Department of Health’s Women, Infants, and Children program (WIC) and the New Mexico Breastfeeding Task Force will host World Breastfeeding Week events at all statewide WIC locations.

World Breastfeeding Week aims to strengthen local support for breastfeeding and improve the health of children and women in the community. It is one of many similar events that take place annually during World Breastfeeding Week (August 1st – 7th). This year, countries around the world will celebrate the international theme, “Closing the Gap.”

“The list of breastfeeding’s health benefits is long,” said New Mexico Department of Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Miranda Durham. “As WIC this year celebrates its 50th anniversary nationally, the work WIC does in our state with parents and youth in the first months and years of our children’s lives will affect public health for years to come. WIC is a cornerstone for achieving our goal to make New Mexico America’s healthiest state by 2040.”

WIC services approximately 430,200 families in New Mexico per year.

WIC is the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). It is a federal program administered by the United States Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service, and the New Mexico Department of Health, Public Health Division.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has issued a proclamation commemorating Breastfeeding Month statewide.
