On November 12, SFPS Student Council members gathered at the B.F. Young Professional Center for a leadership training session. This event was in line with the School Board of Education's Policy 356, which focuses on student engagement.
Deputy Superintendent Vanessa Romero, Work-Based Learning Coordinator Jose Villarreal, and Deputy Chief of Equity and Inclusion Raquel Plaza led the training. The program, continuing from last school year, aims to enhance students' leadership skills and involvement in data-informed decision-making.
During the session, students took charge by leading the agenda, facilitating discussions, sharing insights, and participating in skill-building activities.
"These are our future leaders," said Romero. "Their passion, vision, and readiness to lead were undeniable. It was truly inspiring to witness."
Students analyzed the Spring 2024 Student Survey results to identify key areas affecting their school communities. They showed commitment to positive change by discussing strategies for meaningful school improvements.
"There's no doubt that this diverse and talented group of young leaders are excellent advocates for the SFPS student body," said Plaza. "I'm sure their cooperative work will provide invaluable insights and recommendations."
The next step involves presenting survey insights at their schools and collaborating on actionable recommendations. The following meeting is scheduled for January 2025.
"I was extremely impressed with how each council member stepped up,” said Villarreal. “They surpassed expectations with their initiative, collaboration, and the maturity and insight they brought to every challenge.”
