SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Health (NMHealth) is emphasizing the significance of infant immunizations during National Infant Immunization Week, which runs from April 22 to 29, 2024. Andrea Romero, Immunization Program Manager at NMHealth, stressed the importance of families keeping their children up to date on vaccinations. Romero stated, "NMHealth encourages families to discuss staying up to date on childhood vaccinations with a health professional. Together we can raise awareness and spread the importance of timely immunization. On-schedule vaccinations play a vital role in protecting children and communities from serious disease."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that childhood vaccinations prevent approximately 4 million deaths worldwide each year. In New Mexico, efforts are being made to ensure children are caught up on vaccines, with "vaccine catch up" events scheduled between July 6 and August 17, 2024, for older children needing back-to-school vaccines.
NMHealth.org has already published the 2024-2025 school and daycare immunization requirements, providing a valuable resource for parents as school districts increasingly start earlier in the year. Parents can check their child's vaccination history on https://vaxview.doh.nm.gov or by calling 1-833-882-6454.
As National Infant Immunization Week is observed, the focus is on protecting communities and loved ones through discussions on the importance and health benefits of vaccinations. NM Health encourages families to engage with their medical providers regarding upcoming and recommended immunizations.
