The New Mexico Department of Health (NMHealth) announced it will conduct a survey of New Mexicans to improve disaster preparedness, response, and recovery following recent wildfires and floods in Lincoln County.

“We hope everyone completes the survey. The more diverse and comprehensive the survey, the better we understand the community’s needs,” said Jimmy Masters, NMHealth’s Southwest Region Public Health Director.

NMHealth is asking local households to complete a survey to inform recovery efforts and planning for future emergencies. Results from the survey will be used to learn more about providing emergency services to the community.

The survey is voluntary and confidential, with no record of which households participated. Teams will collect information from Ruidoso and surrounding area households starting August 13th. The survey will also be available at the back-to-school “Got Shots?” clinic at the Ruidoso Public Health Office on August 13 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and from 1-4:00 p.m. This assessment aims to determine critical health needs, assess the impact of disasters on the community, produce household-based information for decision-makers, and evaluate relief efforts' effectiveness.

Door-to-door surveyors will visit some households in Hoopa Valley to learn more about what the community experienced during and following the 2023 winter storms. Surveyors will answer questions about how the survey information will be used to help prepare for future disasters.
