Santa Fe, NM—Today, Santa Fe County released redacted records related to the investigation by the Sheriff's Office into the deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa-Hackman. This action was in compliance with the First Judicial District Court's order, following multiple requests from media and the public.

"The New Mexico Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA) placed the County in a difficult position," said Gregory S. Shaffer, County Manager. "On the one hand, we deeply understand the family's need for privacy during this painful time. On the other, the County has a duty to follow the law and faced potential lawsuits, damages, and attorney's fees under IPRA if we withheld the records."

The Hackman estates and their relatives proposed legal action to block the records' release. In response, the County sought court guidance to balance honoring the family's wishes with avoiding liability under IPRA.

"Our statutory and fiduciary responsibility to taxpayers requires us to find compassionate and workable solutions that respect both public transparency requirements and a grieving family's dignity," stated Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza.

The Board of County Commissioners and the Santa Fe County Sheriff expressed appreciation for the first responders who managed this challenging situation with professionalism under significant media scrutiny. They offer condolences to the Hackman family and commit to respecting the court's preliminary injunction.
