As the annual pilgrimage to El Santuario de Chimayó approaches, more than two dozen public safety agencies in the region are coordinating efforts to ensure the safety of thousands of pilgrims. Santa Fe County announced that these efforts would be in full effect this Good Friday, April 18, 2025.
The coordination involves the Santa Fe County Fire Department, Office of Emergency Management, and Sheriff’s Office, working with other regional partners. The joint operation focuses on traffic management, emergency medical services, and on-the-ground assistance along the pilgrimage route.
A comprehensive list of agencies will be involved with enhanced traffic patrols. "Law enforcement agencies, including the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, New Mexico State Police, the Espanola Police Department, Rio Arriba Sheriff’s Office, Santa Fe City Police Department, Tesuque and Pojoaque Police Departments, Los Alamos Police Department, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and Santa Fe County Animal Control, along with firefighters from various departments, will work together to safeguard the event," the press release states.
Participants are urged to carefully plan for the pilgrimage, especially considering potential traffic congestion. It is recommended to develop a pre-planned route, designate check-in locations, and arrange pick-up and drop-off points since cell phone service may be limited in certain areas.
Several safety guidelines are advised for pilgrims:
- Walk on designated paths and follow signs.
- Wear weather-appropriate clothing and bright, reflective gear.
- Carry a flashlight or glow stick for nighttime visibility.
- Bring necessary supplies such as water, snacks, and sunscreen.
- Walk in groups and inform someone about your route.
- Avoid walking on roadways and medians.
The North Central Regional Transit District (NCRTD) Blue Bus will provide a complimentary shuttle service to Chimayó to aid pilgrims in addition to its regular routes. Those seeking more information on transit schedules are directed to RideTheBlueBus.com.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is preparing the roadways for this annual event, clearing debris and enhancing signage to guide walkers safely along the routes. Furthermore, NMDOT employees will assist pilgrims who may become lost or require emergency aid.
Santa Fe County expressed gratitude towards the Verizon Frontline Crisis Response Team and Lyman Communications for their support. "Verizon Frontline and Lyman Communications will provide enhanced LTE service and satellite connectivity to ensure first responders and the joint information center stay connected and operate effectively throughout the event," Santa Fe County stated.
Motorists in the area should brace for delays starting Thursday night, April 17, and continuing over Easter weekend due to increased pedestrian activity in the Chimayó area. Drivers are advised to be cautious and anticipate possible road closures on US-84/285 N to accommodate pedestrian use.
The pilgrimage to the Santuario de Chimayo is scheduled from Thursday, April 17, 2025, to Sunday, April 20, 2025, taking place along US Highway 84/285, NM Highway 503, Juan Medina Road, and State Road 76. Participants and motorists are encouraged to study the recommended routes for a safe journey.
